Our Mission Statement

It is our mission in Under Our Wings Advocates for Children to advocate for all children across the United States of America. There are too many children affected by child abuse and neglect, too many children in the foster system, and too many children forgotten when they age out of the foster system.

We strive to educate people on the various forms of abuse and neglect, the signs to watch for in children, and what to do if you think a child could be a victim of abuse or neglect. Though there is a lot of educational material accessible out there, people generally do not know the signs of child abuse to look for in their communities, or second-guess themselves when they think they see the signs. We intend to educate across communities, starting in southeast Michigan, about the signs to look for in children and what to do if they believe they see the signs.

We will be hosting fundraisers throughout the year to fundraise for the education of people on child abuse awareness, to collect donations for children in need within the foster system or in low-income families, and for the young adults aged 18-21 who age out of the foster system without a permanent placement to stay with. Partnering with different places across counties in south-east Michigan, we will collect donations of needed supplies and inventory to maintain the welfare of children in the system, along with eventually developing our own way to donate directly to foster families and families in need.

Losing a family member or loved one to child abuse or neglect is devastating; not only are they losing their beloved family member, but they are also left with an unexpected bill for end-of-life care and funeral expenses. For families who are unable to afford funeral expenses, do not have support to get extra funds, and/or are unable to finance the costs, our group will help crowdsource funds to pay for the funeral expenses.

Why We Started This Organization

We keep seeing case after case of child abuse and neglect in the news, where they interview the community after the discovery is made, and everyone talks about the signs they ignored. Cases where someone could have done something if they spoke up, where a parent noticed the signs in their co-parented child, then spoke up and was ignored, and where a welfare worker ignores the conditions of an environment. In our organization, the entire board of directors team was a victim of child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment, and all were a part of the same child abuse awareness group at the same time. We created this group so that we can help the community at every level, locally, state-wide, and nationally, to make a difference. Though we are small, currently, we will be working our way to become a bigger and stronger organization to fight for the welfare of children.

Our Goals

Educate the community to bring awareness.
Fundraise for children in need; clothes, school supplies, and any necessities.
Hold protests and marches to end child abuse, raise awareness, and fight for children's rights.
Lobby for bills and laws that are comprehensive in supporting children's welfare and ensuring justice for children victimized by abuse, neglect, or maltreatment.
Provide resources to victims and families impacted by child abuse.
Help crowdsource funeral expenses for families experiencing the sudden loss of a child in the family caused by child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment.
Work with members of the community and other children's welfare groups to make the U.S. a safer place for children.
